scope of work

as part of the University of Manchester's construction works framework, the AMBS (Alliance Manchester Business School) network transformation project aimed to enhance the Wi-Fi infrastructure throughout the building, from the ground floor to level 10. this involved the installation of both new and refreshed wi-fi access points, upgrading infrastructure cabling, and improving connections to the existing communications rack.

additionally, redundant access points and cabling were removed to streamline the network and improve its efficiency. the overall goal was to create a more robust wi-fi system, improving connectivity for staff and students without causing disruption to the building’s day-to-day operations. given that the project took place in a live building, careful planning was required to ensure minimal disruption to the ongoing activities of staff, students, and the public.

challenges faced

one of the key challenges in this project was working in a live and fully operational building. it was essential to minimise disruption to the building’s occupants while completing the installation. access to specific rooms presented another challenge, as some areas had security restrictions, requiring close coordination with building management.

to minimise the impact on the university’s activities, most of the work was completed during the summer holidays or off-peak hours, when fewer students and staff were on-site. this schedule reduced disruptions and ensured public access remained unrestricted, while prioritising the safety of staff and students
